The latest entrant into the world of electronic book readers, the Borders eBook Reader, has been launched in the UK by the Borders retail chain. Manufactured by Elonex this new device looks and feels very much like the existing Sony eBook reader although the machine is slightly lighter and less expensive than Sony’s.

Retailing at £189 the Borders 600EB eBook Reader is a tad cheaper than the Sony and also has a 6” screen, is approximately 9mm thick and weighs around 180 grams. Available to buy on-line from Borders website next week there will be around 75,000 popular titles available to buy and download from the site. And, as with the Sony, the device will be pre-loaded with around 100 classic titles from authors including Dickens, Shakespeare and Joyce.
The Borders eBook Reader, which supports both ePub and Abode formats, will have capacity to store around 1,000 titles using an external memory card and will display approximately 8,000 pages between charges.
Available from Borders stores now and on-line from the end of July 2009.
